ACTION


The United Nations's engagement with the digital space focuses on making it open, safe, inclusive, and rights-respecting, addressing issues from the digital divide to AI governance through initiatives like the Global Digital Compact and the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, aiming for universal connectivity, digital inclusion, human rights protection (especially for women/girls), and better international cooperation on technology for sustainable development.
 
 Initiatives & Goals: 

Global Digital Compact (GDC): A negotiated agreement for Member States to ensure an open, free, safe, and secure digital future, upholding human rights and international law online.
Roadmap for Digital Cooperation: A framework for action on connectivity, digital public goods, inclusion, capacity building, AI, security, and governance.
UN 2.0: An internal effort to transform UN operations and improve service delivery through digital tools, collaboration, and data.
UNDP Digital Strategy: Aims to embed digital solutions across development programs to empower people and the planet.
 
Key Focus Areas:

Inclusivity & Access: Closing digital divides, ensuring affordable internet for all, and making digital tools accessible, especially for vulnerable groups.
Human Rights: Protecting privacy, free expression, and ensuring rights apply online and offline, combating digital violence, hate speech, and online abuse, particularly against women and girls.
Governance & Security: Developing frameworks for responsible AI, data governance, digital trust, and security.
Digital Public Goods: Promoting open-source solutions and infrastructure to foster a more equitable digital world.
 
Challenges Addressed:

Digital Violence: Tackling online harassment, cyberbullying, and misogyny that disproportionately affect women and girls.
Misinformation: Promoting access to fact-based information.
AI Risks: Ensuring AI is trustworthy, human-rights-based, and safe.
 
In essence, the UN views the digital space as a critical frontier for development, human rights, and global cooperation, working to shape its future through policy, programs, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
